Two fleets, two grids, and no way of seeing the other one. You call a square, they tell you hit or miss, and slowly a picture of where their ships are sitting builds up out of nothing but misses.

The version everyone remembers is two people hunched over paper grids, and the part everyone forgets is the arguing — about whether a hit was recorded, about whose turn it was, about the ship someone quietly moved. Here the server holds both fleets, so neither of you has to be trusted with the other one.

Fleets are placed for you and you can re-roll yours until you like it, which is the difference between starting in ten seconds and spending the first two minutes of a party game drawing boxes.

How to play Battleship

  1. 1Create a room and share the 6-letter code.
  2. 2Two players duel; anyone else in the room watches and takes the winner on.
  3. 3Both fleets are placed at random — shuffle yours until you like it, then lock in.
  4. 4Take turns calling a square on the other grid. A hit is marked, a miss is marked, and a hit buys you another shot.
  5. 5When every cell of a ship has been hit it is announced as sunk, and its position is revealed to both of you.
  6. 6Sink the whole fleet to win the duel. The winner stays on and the next player in the room challenges.

Battleship FAQ

Can I play Battleship online with a friend for free?+

Yes. Create a room, send them the code, and you are playing — no signup, no download, nothing to install. It runs in a browser tab on a phone or a laptop.

Do I get to place my own ships?+

Your fleet is placed for you at random, and you can shuffle it as many times as you like before locking in. Dragging ships around a phone screen is slow and the other player never sees where they went either way, so the shuffle gets you the same game without the fiddling.

What size is the grid?+

The host picks 8 × 8 for a quicker duel or the classic 10 × 10 before starting. Both use a five-ship fleet.

Can more than two people play?+

A duel is always two players, but the whole room can be in it. The winner stays on and the next person challenges, so a group of six takes turns rather than watching two people all evening.

What happens if someone stops playing?+

Each shot has a clock. If it runs out the shot is fired at random for that player, so a duel never stalls on one phone — and the host can fire for them or start the duel early from the referee bar.
