Snakes and Ladders started life in India as Moksha Patam, a game about virtue and vice, and somehow became the most reliable way ever invented to make an eight-year-old shout at a piece of cardboard. The 87 snake is still the cruellest square in board-game history.

This is the classic board — nine ladders, ten snakes, 100 squares — for up to eight players in a browser. Tap to roll, and the app moves you, climbs you, bites you and keeps score. Nobody has to lean over the board to work out where the snake at 62 actually lets out.

How to play Snakes & Ladders

  1. 1Create a room and share the code with up to seven friends.
  2. 2Everyone starts off the board. On your turn, tap to roll.
  3. 3Land on the foot of a ladder and climb it. Land on a snake's head and slide down.
  4. 4Roll a six and you go again — but three sixes in a row burns your turn.
  5. 5You need an exact roll to land on 100, so overshooting keeps you where you are. The host can switch that rule off.
  6. 6First player to 100 wins the game.

Snakes & Ladders FAQ

How many players can play?+

Two to eight in one room, which is enough for a whole family or a classroom group.

Is this the standard board?+

Yes — the classic 100-square board with nine ladders and ten snakes, including the 80 ladder straight to 100 and the 87 snake back down to 24.

Do I need an exact roll to win?+

By default yes: overshooting 100 means you stay put. The host can turn exact finishing off before the game starts if your family plays the other way.

Is Snakes and Ladders an Indian game?+

Originally, yes. It comes from Moksha Patam, where ladders were virtues and snakes were vices — the modern board kept the layout and dropped the morality lesson.

What if someone stops playing?+

Their turn rolls itself after a few seconds, so one person putting their phone down never stalls the race.
