Five Letters is the five-letter guessing game, played by a room at once instead of by one person on the bus. Everybody gets the same word and six guesses, and every guess comes back marked letter by letter: right letter right place, right letter wrong place, or not in the word at all.

What makes it a party game rather than a solo puzzle is that the word is shared. You can see that somebody is on their third guess and somebody else has already solved it, and you cannot see a single letter either of them typed — which is exactly the right amount of information to make a race out of it.

Any five letters is a legal guess. There is no dictionary telling you your perfectly good word does not exist, because a rejected guess is the most annoying thing this kind of game does and wasting a guess on nonsense already costs the person who chose it.

How to play Five Letters

  1. 1Create a room and share the 6-letter code with a friend or seven.
  2. 2Everyone gets the same five-letter word and six guesses each.
  3. 3Type any five letters. Green means right letter, right place; amber means right letter, wrong place.
  4. 4The board shows how many guesses everyone is on and who has solved it — never what anybody typed.
  5. 5Solving in fewer guesses scores more, and the first person in gets a bonus.

Five Letters FAQ

How many people can play Five Letters?+

Two to eight. It works as a head-to-head for two and as a whole-room race for eight, and it is one of the few games here that is genuinely good at both ends.

Can other players see my guesses?+

No. Everyone sees how many guesses you have used and whether you are done. The letters you typed never leave your own screen.

Is any five-letter word allowed?+

Any five letters at all. There is no word list checking your guess, which means no arguments about whether a word counts — and a wasted guess is only ever your own.

Does everybody get the same word?+

Yes, every round. Separate words would be several people doing a puzzle next to each other rather than a room racing.

Are there Indian words?+

Yes, in the Desi pack — five-letter words from Indian food, places and everyday life. The host turns it on before the game starts.
