One Night is social deduction with the elimination taken out. Everybody gets a card, the night happens exactly once, there is one argument and one vote — and the whole thing is over in about ten minutes with nobody having spent a second of it dead.
The rule that makes it work is that your card can be moved while you sleep. The Robber swaps their card with somebody else and looks at it; the Troublemaker swaps two other people's cards without looking at either. So "I know what I am" stops being true, and the werewolf's best weapon — total certainty — is suddenly available to everyone at the table.
The night is resolved in strict order: the Seer reads a card as it was dealt, the Robber takes what is there afterwards, and the Troublemaker moves two cards neither of them will know about. Everybody wakes up with a story, and at least one of those stories is wrong without its owner knowing it.
How to play One Night
- 1Create a room and share the 6-letter code with 3 or more friends.
- 2Everyone is dealt a card: werewolf, seer, robber, troublemaker or villager. Werewolves see each other.
- 3One night: the seer looks at a card, the robber swaps and looks, the troublemaker swaps two other cards blind.
- 4Argue. Somebody's card has probably moved, so nobody can be completely sure what they are.
- 5One vote. If a werewolf is voted out the village wins; a tie or a wrong guess and the wolves take it.
One Night FAQ
How many players do you need for One Night?+
Four to eight. A second werewolf appears at six, because a single wolf in a big room is very hard to catch.
Does anybody get eliminated?+
No. That is the point — there is one vote at the very end, so nobody spends the game watching. It is the version of werewolf that works for a group that has one person who hates being out.
How can my card change?+
The robber can swap their card with yours, and the troublemaker can swap yours with somebody else's. Neither tells you, so the role you were dealt may not be the role you are scored as.
How long does a game take?+
About ten minutes including the argument, which is why it fits between two other games rather than replacing an evening.
Is this the same as Mafia?+
Same family, very different game. Mafia runs forty minutes with elimination and a host; this is one night, one vote, everybody playing the whole way through.
