What playing it feels like
- A hand of cards you hold close, played fast against a table that is watching your count.
- Loud and in the room: people talk, act, sing or shout, so it works best with everyone together.
- Nothing to explain. Start it and go.
Good for
- Groups of 2 to 8
- A quick round while you wait for everyone to arrive
- A mixed group where half have never played it
Maybe skip when
- You are on a video call, or somewhere that needs to stay quiet
FlipOut is a quick card battle you play on your phone, together, in one room. Everyone is dealt seven cards and the table starts with one face up. On your turn you play a card that matches its color or its number, and the first person to empty their hand wins the deal.
The action cards are what make it loud. BLOCK skips the next player, FLIP sends the turn back the other way, DRAW 2 makes someone pick up and lose their go, SHIFT lets you change the color, and FLIPOUT — the big one — changes the color and makes the next player take four.
The server deals, shuffles and referees every move, so nobody can play a card they do not hold or out of turn, and nobody can see anyone else's hand. When your phone drops out for a second you come back to the same cards and the same turn.
How to play FlipOut
- 1Create a room and share the 6-letter code with 1 to 7 friends.
- 2Everyone is dealt seven cards and one card starts the pile. On your turn play a card that matches its color or its number.
- 3BLOCK skips the next player. FLIP reverses the direction. DRAW 2 makes the next player pick up two and lose their turn.
- 4SHIFT lets you pick a new color. FLIPOUT picks a color and makes the next player take four and lose their turn.
- 5Nothing to play? Draw a card, and play it if it fits. Empty your hand first to win the deal.
FlipOut FAQ
How many people can play FlipOut?
Two to eight. Three to six is the sweet spot: enough people that a FLIP changes who is in trouble, few enough that the turn comes round quickly.
How long does a game take?
Five to fifteen minutes for one deal. The host can set up to five deals if the room wants a longer night, and the points from each add up.
Can other players see my cards?
No. Everyone sees how many cards you are holding and when you are down to your last one, but the cards themselves only ever appear on your own screen.
Can I stack a DRAW 2 on a DRAW 2?
No. Penalty cards do not stack, so a pile-up never decides the game on its own — the next player takes their cards and the game moves on.
What happens if I take too long?
You draw a card and the turn moves on. The game never plays a card for you, and the host can set the clock from 10 to 90 seconds before starting.
What if I draw a card I can play?
You can play it straight away, or keep it and pass. If the card you draw does not fit, your turn simply ends.
